Petrovac as a Base for Exploring the Montenegrin Coast

Petrovac as a Base for Exploring the Montenegrin Coast | Hotel Eleven

Montenegro is a small country, yet its relatively short distances reveal a surprising variety of landscapes. In a single day, you can stroll through an old coastal town, swim in the Adriatic, head into the mountains or take a boat trip on Lake Skadar. This variety can make planning a trip challenging if you try to spend every night in a different place.

Petrovac is an appealing starting point because it lies in the central part of Montenegro’s coast and allows you to explore different parts of the country without changing hotels during your stay. Instead of constantly packing and unpacking, you can settle in one place and plan day trips around the weather, your interests and your mood. If you are looking for excursions from Petrovac, it is easy to combine historic towns, beaches and natural attractions.

Hotel Eleven is located in a quieter part of Petrovac, just a few minutes’ walk from the beach. You can start the day by the sea and then drive to another part of the Montenegrin coast or head inland. If you are wondering what to visit in Montenegro, Petrovac is a practical starting point for discovering the country’s many different sides.

One of the most common dilemmas when planning a trip around Montenegro is how to see as much as possible without spending your holiday in the car. Budva, Kotor, Perast, Sveti Stefan, Bar, Ulcinj, Lake Skadar and the mountainous regions all offer very different experiences, so it is easy to spend several days constantly moving between accommodations.

There is a simpler approach: choose one base and take day trips from there. Petrovac is well positioned for this kind of travel. It lies between the Budva and Bar areas, along the main coastal road, making it easy to head north or south without having to start each journey from a different town. Hotel Eleven is in Petrovac, approximately a 20–25-minute drive from Budva and Bar, while Tivat and Podgorica are also accessible thanks to good road connections.

This does not mean that you can explore all of Montenegro in just a few hours. Kotor and the Bay of Kotor require more time, while the country’s northern regions, such as Durmitor and Tara Canyon, call for a full day. That is why it helps to group destinations in advance according to direction and distance.

You could set aside one day for Budva and Sveti Stefan, another for Kotor and Perast, and a third for Bar or Lake Skadar. If you have more time, you can venture farther inland. These day trips from Petrovac let you discover a different part of the country each day while returning to familiar surroundings in the evening.

When deciding what to visit in Montenegro, you do not have to limit yourself to the best-known towns. With a little planning, you can combine the coast, cultural heritage, local cuisine and natural attractions while still leaving enough time to relax.

Why Petrovac? A Location That Works in Your Favour

Petrovac lies between Budva and Bar, making it a convenient base for exploring different parts of the Montenegrin coast. To the north are Budva and the well-known resorts of the Budva Riviera. Continue towards the Bay of Kotor and you can visit Kotor, Perast and other settlements around the bay. South of Petrovac are Bar, Ulcinj and long sandy beaches.

Another advantage is that Petrovac itself has plenty to offer on days when you do not feel like taking a trip. You can stroll by the sea, spend time on the beach or enjoy a drink along the waterfront. There is no need to spend every day in the car to feel that you have experienced something worthwhile.

The Adriatic Highway runs along the coast, connecting many seaside towns. From Petrovac, it is relatively easy to travel north or south, although traffic can slow down during the summer season, especially near popular tourist destinations. Petrovac is not immune to seasonal congestion, but it can be a good choice for travellers who want to explore several places without staying in the busiest part of Budva.

Connections to airports are also important. Tivat Airport is convenient for reaching the coast, while Petrovac can be reached from Podgorica Airport by road through the interior. Driving times depend on traffic and the route chosen, so it is worth checking them before arranging your arrival.

However, something else matters more when choosing a base: you do not have to turn every excursion into a move to a new accommodation. Staying several nights in one place makes planning easier, reduces the time spent checking in and out, and leaves more room for what you came for—discovering Montenegro.

If you are planning day trips from Petrovac, it helps to decide in advance what you would like to see without scheduling every hour. This makes it easier to adapt your day to the weather, traffic or simply the desire to stay longer somewhere you particularly enjoy.

Trips North of Petrovac

If you are looking for a shorter trip, Sveti Stefan is an obvious first choice. This small island, connected to the mainland by a narrow causeway, is one of the most recognisable sights on the Montenegrin coast. Its stone houses, red roofs and position beside turquoise water make it especially photogenic.

Sveti Stefan is relatively quick to reach from Petrovac, so it works well for a morning trip or can be combined with a visit to Budva. You do not need to dedicate an entire day to this location. Stop at a viewpoint, walk along the publicly accessible part of the coast and continue to your next destination.

Keep in mind that the island is associated with a luxury hotel complex, so access to the settlement itself is not always open to the public. Check visiting options before you arrive, and remember that some of the best views are from nearby public viewpoints.

Budva is a good choice if you want to combine sightseeing, swimming and an evening out. Its Old Town sits beside the sea within historic walls, while narrow stone streets, squares and small churches give it a distinctive atmosphere.

It is best to allow at least half a day for Budva, although you can stay until the evening. Start with a walk through the Old Town, continue along the waterfront or visit one of the nearby beaches, then choose a restaurant or café. The town is lively in summer, making it ideal for visitors who enjoy activity, but less suited to those looking for complete tranquillity.

If you are travelling by car, check parking options in advance. During the busiest part of the season, finding a space can take time, so it is useful to arrive early or plan your visit outside the busiest hours.

Kotor is one of the most interesting destinations for lovers of history and architecture. Its Old Town, part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, is known for its stone streets, squares, churches and walls rising above the town. Simply walking through the historic centre can take several hours.

If you are ready for a climb, you can continue towards the fortress above Kotor. The steps and ascent require a reasonable level of fitness, but the views over the rooftops and the Bay of Kotor make the effort worthwhile. On hot days, bring water, wear suitable shoes and avoid the hottest part of the day.

After Kotor, continue to Perast, a smaller historic town on the bay. Its stone palaces, church towers and views of the island of Our Lady of the Rocks make it especially appealing for a leisurely walk and photography. The island is usually reached by organised boat, with options and schedules varying by season.

Allow most of the day for a trip from Petrovac to Kotor and Perast. The distance is not enormous, but coastal traffic can be slower than expected, and both places deserve enough time. For more details and ideas, you can plan this excursion by reading our blog, “Kotor and Perast.”

If you want to get to know the Bay of Kotor better, do not stop at Kotor alone. The bay is dotted with settlements, historic centres and coastal towns, each with its own character. Driving along the waterfront offers beautiful views of the mountains rising above the bay and the villages along its shores.

Herceg Novi lies at the entrance to the bay and is known for its old fortresses, stairways, squares and greenery. You can spend several hours walking around, exploring the historic centre and relaxing by the sea. However, because it is farther from Petrovac and traffic can be heavy, it is best to plan this as a full-day trip, especially if you want to visit other places around the bay.

Before setting off, decide whether you want to see as many places as possible or focus on two or three. Trying to see the entire bay in one day can mean spending too much time in the car and too little enjoying the towns themselves.

If you are wondering what to visit in Montenegro beyond its best-known coastal towns, the Bay of Kotor is an excellent choice for discovering historic places, local architecture and landscapes where the sea meets steep mountain slopes.

For a different perspective on Montenegro, head towards Mount Lovćen. After the coast and its Mediterranean climate, the drive into the higher elevations brings different scenery, fresher air and sweeping views of the surrounding mountains and sea.

One of the highlights of Lovćen National Park is the mausoleum of Petar II Petrović-Njegoš on Jezerski Vrh. A flight of steps leads up to it, and on clear days the summit offers expansive views of the mountain landscape. Check the weather before visiting, as conditions in the mountains can differ from those on the coast.

You can combine the trip with a visit to Njeguši, known for its prosciutto and cheese. Stopping at a local restaurant is a chance to sample the traditional flavours of the region. Lovćen and Njeguši are a good choice for combining nature, history and gastronomy in one day. More information about the park and visiting options is available on the official Lovćen National Park website.

Trips South of Petrovac

South of Petrovac lies Bar, a town with both a modern waterfront and a rich historical heritage. While the newer part of town is associated with the port, shops and everyday life, Stari Bar lies farther from the coast, at the foot of the mountains.

The ruins of Stari Bar bear witness to the settlement’s long history and the different periods that shaped the area. Walking through the old walls, stone streets and remains of former buildings is an interesting way to discover a lesser-known side of the Montenegrin coast.

Near Bar you will also find the famous Old Olive Tree in Mirovica, considered one of the oldest trees in Europe. You can combine a visit with a tour of Stari Bar and lunch at a local restaurant, making for a rewarding excursion without travelling far from the coast.

If the sea, sand and plenty of space for walking are your priorities, add Ulcinj and Velika Plaža to your list. Unlike the many smaller coves along the coast, Velika Plaža stretches for kilometres and is known for its wide strip of sand.

You can spend much of the day swimming, walking along the shore or simply relaxing on the beach. Its size makes it easier to find a spot that suits you, although some areas have organised sun loungers and food and drink facilities during the season.

Ulcinj also has an old town perched on a rise above the sea. Its narrow streets and stone buildings are an interesting addition to a beach day. Keep in mind that Ulcinj is farther from Petrovac than Bar, so it is best to set off early and leave enough time for the return journey. If you plan to spend longer on the sand, avoid filling the schedule with additional distant stops.

For more ideas, you can also read our blog “Velika Plaža, Ulcinj,” which offers further inspiration for planning a day in the southern part of the coast.

Ada Bojana lies at the southernmost end of the Montenegrin coast, near Ulcinj. It is an area where the Bojana River flows into the Adriatic Sea, known for its sandy shores, natural scenery and waterfront restaurants.

The focus here is less on traditional sightseeing and more on the atmosphere. You can walk beside the river, enjoy the views over the water and finish the day with dinner at a local restaurant. Fish dishes are common in the area, although opening hours and availability vary by season.

Ada Bojana fits well into a full-day trip that includes Ulcinj and Velika Plaža. Since it lies farther south, it is not the most practical destination for a quick visit on its own, but it can be a lovely end to a day by the sea.

If you would like to spend at least one day away from the coast, Lake Skadar offers a completely different experience. Instead of salt water and beaches, you will find a vast lake, wetlands, mountains and rich birdlife. Much of the lake lies within a national park that is important for nature and bird conservation.

Virpazar is one of the best-known starting points for boat trips on the lake. During the ride, you can observe the shoreline, vegetation and birds, and the experience is especially peaceful in the early morning. Different tours are available, so check the duration, route and what is included in the price before booking.

The surrounding area is also known for its vineyards and local cuisine. If you are interested in wine tasting or visiting a family-run winery, arrange your visit and transport in advance, especially if you plan to drink alcohol.

A trip to Lake Skadar is a good choice for travellers who want a break from the beaches and would like to discover another side of the country. More information about natural attractions and visiting options is available on the National Parks of Montenegro website.

If you are looking for ideas for excursions from Petrovac beyond the sea and historic towns, Lake Skadar is an appealing option. A boat trip, birdwatching and the lake scenery offer a different pace for the day, especially when temperatures along the coast are high.

Trips Inland – Montenegro Beyond the Coast

Cetinje, the former capital of Montenegro, is a good choice for anyone interested in the country’s history. The town is known for its museums, former royal residences and Cetinje Monastery, and its atmosphere differs from that of the lively coastal resorts.

You can set aside a few hours to explore the town, depending on how many museums and historic sites you want to visit. If you are travelling by car, you can combine the trip with Lovćen, bringing cultural attractions and mountain scenery together in one day.

Cetinje is particularly interesting for travellers who want to understand Montenegro’s history rather than see only its best-known beaches. Check museum opening hours before your visit, as they may vary by season and day of the week.

For nature lovers and those seeking an active holiday, Tara Canyon is one of Montenegro’s most impressive excursions. Steep cliffs, the river and forested landscapes create views that are very different from the coast. The Tara River is also known for rafting, while the Đurđevića Tara Bridge is one of the area’s most recognisable landmarks.

However, this is not a trip to plan on the spur of the moment. The drive from Petrovac is long, so it is best to leave early and decide in advance whether you want to stop at viewpoints, visit the bridge or join an organised rafting tour.

Rafting depends on the season, water levels and weather conditions. Choose an operator that provides the necessary equipment and instructions. If your main aim is to enjoy the scenery, you can opt for a shorter visit without activities that require more time.

If you do not want to spend so many hours on the road, it is better to save Tara Canyon for a trip that includes an overnight stay in the north of the country. However, if nature is your main reason for visiting Montenegro, it can be a worthwhile addition to your itinerary.

Montenegro has several national parks that show just how much its landscapes can vary within a small area. Lovćen is a practical choice to combine with Cetinje, while Durmitor and Biogradska Gora appeal to visitors looking for mountains, forests, lakes and hiking trails.

Durmitor is known for its high peaks, glacial lakes and hiking opportunities, and Tara Canyon is also located in the wider area. Biogradska Gora attracts visitors with its forest scenery and lake. Both areas take longer to reach from Petrovac, so it is better to plan them as separate full-day excursions or as part of a longer trip inland.

If you would prefer to stay closer to the coast, Lovćen is a more practical option for a day trip. You can combine panoramic views, a walk and a visit to the mausoleum, then return to Petrovac for dinner by the sea.

Before visiting any national park, check trail conditions, the weather forecast, opening hours for facilities and any entrance fees. Mountain conditions can change quickly and may be very different from the weather on the coast, even when Petrovac is sunny. You can also find useful information in our blog about Montenegro’s national parks.

If you are still deciding what to visit in Montenegro, the national parks are a reminder that the country offers much more than coastal towns and beaches. From forest trails and mountain lakes to panoramic viewpoints, nature lovers can find options for different fitness levels and interests.

Petrovac as a Starting Point for a Holiday at Your Own Pace

The greatest advantage of choosing one base is not trying to see every corner of Montenegro in just a few days, but being able to set your own pace. Petrovac lets you combine days by the sea with trips to Budva, Sveti Stefan, Bar or Lake Skadar, while more distant destinations can be planned as longer days on the road.

If this is your first visit to Montenegro, a good starting itinerary could include Sveti Stefan and Budva, a day in Kotor and Perast, and a trip to Lake Skadar. If you have already visited the best-known coastal towns, you may prefer Lovćen, Cetinje or the southern coast around Ulcinj. This variety is what makes day trips from Petrovac appealing to travellers with different interests.

You do not have to get up early every day or return to your accommodation exhausted from driving. Leave time for swimming, a leisurely lunch and a walk around Petrovac. These moments are often just as valuable as the sights you marked on the map in advance.

Hotel Eleven can be the starting point for a holiday that is not limited to a single destination. With a well-planned itinerary and realistic expectations about driving times, you can discover the many sides of Montenegro—from stone-built towns and quiet bays to lakeside scenery and mountain landscapes—while returning each evening to the same place by the sea.

If you are planning a trip and are still unsure what to visit in Montenegro, start with a few places that appeal to you most and leave room for spontaneous discoveries. Petrovac is a great base for this kind of holiday: close enough to different parts of the coast, yet pleasant for days when your only plan is to enjoy the sea.
